A 5-year-old girl riding a tricycle was struck and killed Thursday night by an MTA bus, officials said.

The girl pedaled out of the driveway of a Pasadena apartment complex where she lived with her foster mother just before 8 p.m.

The bus was traveling north on Fair Oaks Avenue, Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Bill Heard said. The bus had just passed through the intersection at Tremont Street when the girl moved into its path, said Pasadena police spokeswoman Janet Pope Givens.

The driver tried to stop in time but couldn’t, Pope Givens said. The bus did not appear to be speeding, she said.

As is standard in all such incidents, the driver will be tested to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police chaplains and a psychiatric evaluation team were brought in to help the girl’s distraught foster mother.

The Line 260 bus runs from Long Beach to Pasadena. The driver was about two blocks from the end of the line when the accident occurred. “He was so upset,” Heard said.
