The road through the playoffs was expected to be a little bumpier this season for the top-seeded North Hollywood Campbell Hall boys’ basketball team, which finished undefeated last season and won the Division IV state title. But few expected the Vikings to hit a pothole the size of Gardena Serra.

The third-seeded Cavaliers jumped to a double-digit lead early in the second quarter and held on for a 73-59 victory in the Southern Section Division IV-AA championship game Friday night at Loyola Marymount.

Serra (23-7), which last won a section title in 2000, took a 19-9 lead after a 12-0 run that was capped by Donavan Bragg’s three-point basket with 6 minutes 7 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Bragg, a 6-foot-4 junior guard, sank two additional three-point baskets in the quarter to help Serra maintain a 10-point lead at the half. He finished with 21 points.
