Arizona’s Adams Out of Pac-10 Tournament

Arizona Coach Lute Olson suspended the team’s leading scorer, Hassan Adams, from this week’s Pacific 10 Conference tournament on Monday after the forward’s arrest on suspicion of drunk driving over the weekend in Tucson.

Adams, a 21-year-old senior, issued a statement through the university apologizing to the coaches, university and the Wildcats’ fans.

Tennessee sophomore forwards Anthony Passley and Jordan Smith were charged with possession of crack cocaine and suspended indefinitely from the team after being arrested early Sunday in Knoxville, Tenn. Passley also was charged with simple possession of marijuana, police said.

Bobby Brown of Cal State Fullerton, Aaron Fitzgerald of UC Irvine and Jibril Hodges of Long Beach State were among the six players selected All-Big West Conference first team Monday.

Johnny Gray and Christian Maraker of Pacific and Derek Stockalper of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo also were chosen first team.

Maraker, who finished second in scoring average (17.2) and led the conference in rebounding (9.0), was the player of the year. Bob Thomason, who guided Pacific to a third consecutive regular-season championship, was coach of the year for the third year in a row.

Second-team selections were Cecil Brown of UC Santa Barbara, Jamaal Brown of Fullerton, Shawn Hawkins and Kejuan Johnson of Long Beach State, and Ricky Porter of UC Riverside.

Crystal McCutcheon and Mary Hegarty of Long Beach State were chosen the Big West Conference women’s player and coach of the year, respectively.

Cal State Fullerton’s Toni Thomas was the freshman of the year.

Also on the first team were Jenna Green of UC Santa Barbara, Angie Ned of UC Irvine and Kemie Nkele of UC Riverside.
