The rest of it

WHILE George Clooney and the academy patted themselves on the back for supposedly having been ahead of the rest of America in civil rights, I wondered about some of Hollywood’s other legacies. Maybe next year Clooney will salute Hollywood’s love affair with tobacco and acknowledge that its glorification of cigarettes has been a major factor in generations of young Americans taking up a deadly habit. Maybe the academy also will extol its rampant use of gratuitous violence and its glamorization of promiscuous sex.

I’D like to thank the academy for the awards show, which was so amazing. It was terrific to see all those amazing actors and actresses. The gowns were truly amazing. I even enjoyed the amazing acceptance speeches.
Maybe next year the academy can hand out an Oscar and a thesaurus to each winner.

During the Oscars, the stars giving acceptance speeches had to rush, but academy President Sid Ganis went out on stage for what seemed like three to five minutes. Give the time to the stars. We turn on the TV show to see them, not some academy executive.
