Detroit Wins, 5-3, to Extend Streak

Pavel Datsyuk and Mathieu Schneider each had a goal and two assists, and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Blackhawks, 5-3, Sunday night at Chicago for their third straight win.

Newly acquired defenseman Cory Cross, Brendan Shanahan and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for Detroit, which has won five of six and 11 of 13.

The Red Wings built a 3-0 lead in the opening 6:57 and beat the Blackhawks for the sixth time this season and seventh in a row overall. The Blackhawks haven’t defeated Detroit since Dec. 28, 2003.

Mikael Holmqvist, Patrick Sharp and Mark Cullen scored for Chicago, which lost its third straight and eighth in 10.

Atlanta 3, New York Rangers 2 -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored the tying goal late in regulation and Marc Savard netted the winner 2:45 into overtime on the Thrashers’ second shot of the extra session.

It was the fifth straight loss for the Rangers, who have scored only six goals in their longest skid of the season.

Ronald Petrovicky also scored for Atlanta. Martin Straka added a goal for New York.

Minnesota 4, Edmonton 3 -- Brian Rolston and Pierre-Marc Bouchard combined for eight points for the Wild at St. Paul, Minn. Dwayne Roloson had 26 saves against his former Wild teammates and is 0-3 since coming to Edmonton in a trade last week.

Buffalo 6, Boston 2 -- Maxim Afinogenov scored on a penalty shot at Buffalo, N.Y., and added two assists to help the Sabres extend their winning streak to six games.

Thomas Vanek scored twice and set up another goal, and Ales Kotalik had a goal and two assists for the Sabres.

Andrew Alberts, with his first career goal, and Brad Boyes scored for Boston.

Ottawa 5, Washington 2 -- The Senators’ Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza each had a goal and two assists at Washington. The Senators are 7-0-1 in their last eight games against the Capitals, who controlled play in the early minutes before Ottawa took command.

Colorado 3, Calgary 0 -- Peter Budaj stopped 22 shots for his first career shutout, and the Avalanche moved into first place in the Northwest Division.

Joe Sakic and Alex Tanguay each had a goal and an assist. Milan Hejduk added a short-handed goal.

Goalie Miikka Kiprusoff had 33 saves for the Flames.

Pittsburgh 2, Philadelphia 0 -- Rookie Colby Armstrong had a career-high two goals, and the Penguins killed a late seven-minute power play at home.
