Hampton Coach Resigns After Play-In Loss

Bobby Collins resigned as coach at Hampton on Thursday, two days after his team lost the NCAA tournament play-in game.

The Pirates went 65-57 in four seasons under Collins and reached the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament championship three times, winning the title last week.

Hampton lost, 71-49, to Monmouth on Tuesday in the play-in game to see which team would play Villanova in the first round of the NCAA tournament tonight in Philadelphia.

“We appreciate all of his contributions to the men’s basketball program,” interim Athletic Director Joe Taylor said in a statement. “We wish him well in all future endeavors.”

Ohio State must erase references from university-produced material to all regular-season games the Buckeyes played while using an ineligible player, in addition to removing any NCAA tournament trips they made from 1999-2002.

Ohio State spokesman Steve Snapp said the university asked the NCAA whether it had to wipe out references to all games played and not just those played in the postseason.

“They said it is for all the regular-season games and postseason games,” Snapp said.

Hartford Coach Larry Harrison, selected as coach of the year by his colleagues in the America East conference two weeks ago, resigned after a 13-15 season.

He had a 67-107 record during six years at the school, and had a winning record just once. The Hawks went 16-13 in 2002-03.

Neither Harrison nor the school gave a reason for his departure.

An attorney for Arizona’s Hassan Adams has entered an innocent plea for his client to charges of drunken driving and speeding.

The senior and team-leading scorer, in Philadelphia with the Wildcats for a first-round NCAA tournament game today, was arrested March 5 on suspicion of driving 40 mph in a 30-mph zone near the university.
