Legace, Detroit Silence San Jose

Manny Legace had 28 saves to register his sixth shutout and Detroit defeated San Jose, 4-0, Thursday night at Detroit.

Tomas Holmstrom, Jason Williams, Steve Yzerman and Mikael Samuelsson each had a goal and the Red Wings won for the seventh time in eight games. The victory moved Detroit back to the top of the NHL’s overall standings with 102 points.

Atlanta 6, New Jersey 5 -- Peter Bondra scored 1:03 into overtime to give the Thrashers the victory at Atlanta and a four-game season sweep of the Devils.

It was the Thrashers’ third consecutive victory and eighth in 10 games and New Jersey’s fifth loss in six games and lifted Atlanta within a point of the Devils for seventh place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Vancouver 4, Edmonton 3 -- The Canucks won a shootout at Vancouver, Canada, and moved into a sixth-place tie with the Ducks in the Western Conference playoff race and two points ahead of the eighth-place Oilers.

Montreal 5, Toronto 1 -- Alex Kovalev scored his 18th goal and the Canadiens scored four times in the first period and won at Montreal.

Montreal remains ninth in the Eastern Conference, one point behind eighth-place Atlanta for the final playoff spot.

Calgary 7, St. Louis 2 -- Defenseman Roman Hamrlik scored two goals to help the Flames defeat the reeling Blues at St. Louis.

Tampa Bay 4, Washington 3 -- Ryan Craig’s third-period goal forced overtime and Pavel Kubina scored 37 seconds into the extra period to lift the Lightning to victory at Tampa, Fla.

Phoenix 4, Chicago 3 -- Steven Reinprecht had a goal and two assists and the Coyotes won their third in a row at Glendale, Ariz.
