Giguere Takes On the Role of Spectator

This was his time three years ago. The postseason was his stage.

At the moment, Jean-Sebastien Giguere is a spectator with rookie Ilya Bryzgalov getting the start in Game 7 against the Calgary Flames after strong starts in Game 1 and Game 6.

Giguere was the Conn Smythe trophy winner in 2003 when he led the Mighty Ducks to the Stanley Cup finals. On Wednesday, he focused on being a good teammate.

“I’m going to be supportive,” Giguere said. “ ... And I think we’re going to be successful.

“Yeah, I want to play and it’s not the funnest situation. But I’ve got a prime seat to a great game. There’s no complaint here. I’m going to keep working hard.”

Giguere lost his spot in goal after giving up three goals in eight shots in Game 5. It remains to be seen if that may have been his last game as a Duck.

With the emergence of the younger and cheaper Bryzgalov, the Ducks could attempt to trade the Giguere, 28, in the off-season. Giguere, who is making $3.99 million, has one year left on his contract and there are several NHL teams that could use an upgrade in the net.

“What they decide in the upcoming years is going to be up to [general manager Brian Burke],” Giguere said. “There’s contract issues and all kind of stuff like that. I’m not going to start worrying about it.”
