From Times Staff and Wire Reports

San Jose’s mayor apologized Monday for the behavior of Sharks fans who loudly booed during the Canadian national anthem before Game 5 of the second-round playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers.

“This showed a lack of respect to our Canadian neighbors, to the players of both teams and to our own residents,” Mayor Ron Gonzales said.

“I sincerely hope that this occurrence of bad behavior by a small number of fans is an aberration caused by misplaced enthusiasm and an ignorance of the expected courtesy that we should extend to all teams and players in every stadium, ballpark and arena.”

Buffalo Sabres defenseman Dmitri Kalinin will miss the start of the Eastern Conference finals series against Carolina, and center Tim Connolly may join him on the sideline.

Sabres Coach Lindy Ruff ruled out any possibility of Kalinin’s playing when the best-of-seven series opens at Carolina this weekend. Connolly’s status is unclear after he suffered a concussion in Game 2 on May 8.

Mighty Ducks goaltender David McKee has been added to Team USA’s roster for the world championships, already underway in Riga, Latvia.

McKee, who played last season at Cornell, signed a two-year contract with the Ducks in April. He has worked out with the team in Anaheim during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Ducks went through a brisk workout Monday, preparing for the Western Conference finals, where they will take on the winner of the Edmonton-San Jose series.

“The first two days are for conditioning, then we move into drills,” Coach Randy Carlyle said.

As for how intense the workouts will be, Carlyle said, “You can’t simulate a Stanley Cup playoff game. If you did, all your guys would get hurt.”
