A 16-year-old boy was shot and wounded by an officer Sunday night after allegedly opening fire on police at Rosecrans Park, said Los Angeles Police Capt. Horace Frank.

The boy was wounded several times after a gang officer from the LAPD’s Southeast Division, responding to a call of a large number of gang members at the park, returned fire, Frank said. The officer was not identified.

The boy was in serious condition at a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. The gun was recovered at the scene, Frank said. No officers were injured.

A short time later, in Watts, officers shot at another suspected gang member believed to have been involved in an attempted drive-by shooting at the Jordan Downs housing complex, said LAPD Officer Mike Lopez.

Officers fired at the suspect, who was not injured, after he pointed a gun at them, Lopez said. The suspect was arrested.
