Clippers beat Knicks 107-105 in debut
Nov. 1, 1984: The Clippers debuted in Los Angeles and The Times’ reports were upbeat:
“This no doubt was the way Donald T. Sterling, nomadic National Basketball Assn. owner, envisioned opening night six months ago when he decided to move the Clippers from San Diego to Los Angeles.”
“Everything Sterling had hoped would happen did.... There was a lively crowd of 12,018, there was the flash and glitter of fireworks, spotlights during player introductions and even Mayor Tom Bradley on hand to toss the ceremonial first jump ball.”
Los Angeles’ new team beat the New York Knicks, 107-105.
The Times said the Clippers would never be confused with the Lakers.
But it also said: “They will present themselves as the people’s team, selling quality basketball at popular prices.”
