Curtis Martin tried to outrun the inevitable.

After months of rehabilitation in a bid to return to the New York Jets, reality finally caught up to the NFL’s No. 4 career rusher.

“I think this is as good as my knee gets, where it is right now,” Martin said Wednesday at a news conference in Hempstead, N.Y.

The Jets put Martin, 33, on the reserve physically-unable-to perform list because of a bone-on-bone condition in his right knee, ending his season before it got started and jeopardizing his career.

“I usually deal with things the way they are now, and with the information that I know about my future, it doesn’t look like it’s too bright as far as me having a further career,” Martin said. “And if that happens, great.”

Martin added, “I’m officially not playing this year. Retirement -- that may be the inevitable result. I just haven’t gotten there yet.”

Martin tore cartilage in the knee in week 2 against Miami last season, and aggravated it two games later. He played through the pain but ended his season after week 12.

Martin said the knee became a “bone-on-bone” situation when the damaged cartilage was removed during surgery in December.

The Tennessee Titans suspended cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones for one game as punishment for his long list of off-field incidents.

Coach Jeff Fisher said that Jones also will be fined what he called “significant financial ... considerations.” Jones also faces potential punishment from the NFL for violating its personal conduct policy.

Jones was charged last weekend with misdemeanor assault for allegedly verbally abusing and spitting on a woman at a nightclub in Nashville. It is the second time Jones has been accused of spitting on a woman at a club this year.

Charges Jones faced from a July 2005 incident at a club were dismissed earlier this year.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger disclosed for the first time that he’s not riding a motorcycle any longer. Previously, he said only that he would put on a helmet when doing so.

Roethlisberger’s motorcycle crash June 12 left him with the first of two concussions he has had this year, a battered face that required seven hours of surgery and other more minor injuries.

Linebacker Napoleon Harris (dislocated wrist), defensive tackle Pat Williams (swollen knee) and receiver Marcus Robinson (bruised lower back) are also questionable.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich returned to practice and declared himself healthy enough to play.

Coach Jack Del Rio, however, sidestepped the quarterback situation, fueling speculation he may start David Garrard again even if Leftwich is ready after missing last week’s victory at Philadelphia because of a sore left ankle.

Houston Texans defensive end Mario Williams did not practice because of a sore arch on his right foot but is expected to play Sunday against the New York Giants.
