Cassell looks at big picture

All-Star forward Elton Brand and center Chris Kaman are off to slow starts, so the Clippers have relied more on others for scoring.

And that’s the way it should be, point guard Sam Cassell said.

“We’ve got a lot of different ways we can go with the ball now,” Cassell said. “We’ve got Tim Thomas, who can post up. People think of him as just a three-point shooter, but he has stuff on the post. He can do things down there.”

Cuttino Mobley “is one of our best post players, Quinton Ross has been making the wide-open 15-foot jump shot and Shaun Livingston is getting inside the paint and making his little pull-up shot.”

Cassell has continued to lead the way in his 14th season in the NBA, providing scoring, clutch shooting and leadership.

The co-captain had 13 points and four assists in Sunday’s 92-76 victory over the New Orleans Hornets at Staples Center and leads the team with averages of 20.8 points and 5.3 assists. Brand, who shares captain duties with Cassell, had his best game since the season opener, scoring 22 with 10 rebounds and four assists.

Cassell is among the league’s best at making mid-range jumpers and drawing fouls, and those skills helped the Clippers to overcome deficits and finish well in a 5-0 homestand.

“I know what I have to do for this basketball team,” he said. “I’ve just got to run the team, get my guys involved and make big shots.”

With Brand and Kaman trying to revert to form, other players must continue to do more, Cassell said.

“If you’re a good team, that’s what the team does when some guys aren’t doing what they usually do,” he said. “ ... Once E.B. and Kaman get going, we’ll be even better.”

Based on Brand’s performance against the Hornets, it shouldn’t take much longer, Cassell said.

“Even if E.B. has 25 mediocre games early and the rest are great games, I’ll take that,” he said.
