Shaquille O’Neal will undergo knee surgery and be sidelined for four to six weeks, the Miami Heat said Friday.

O’Neal tore cartilage in his left knee Sunday when he collided with Houston’s Chuck Hayes. The injury was originally diagnosed as a hyper-extension.

The Heat center sat out Tuesday’s game, practiced Thursday and was expected to play Friday night against the New York Knicks. But he was listed as inactive, and the Heat announced that he would undergo surgery, with the date not disclosed.

O’Neal sat out two games earlier in the season because of a bruise on the knee.

Boston Celtics center Michael Olowokandi will be sidelined two to four weeks because of a slight tear in an abdominal muscle, the team said.

Olowokandi joins Al Jefferson and Theo Ratliff on the bench, leaving Kendrick Perkins as Boston’s only healthy player taller than 6 feet 9.
