BCS by the numbers
NO. 1 OHIO STATE: Clinched a berth in the Jan. 8 BCS national title game with a 42-39 win over Michigan in Columbus. A formal bid won’t be announced until Dec. 3.
NO. 2 MICHIGAN: The Wolverines suffered their first loss but played Ohio State close enough to warrant consideration for a rematch against the Buckeyes.
NO. 3 USC: The Trojans stayed very much in contention by shutting out the high-powered California offense in the second half and posting a comeback win at the Coliseum.
NO. 4 FLORIDA: The Gators had a wipeout win over Western Carolina, 62-0, but that probably won’t help them in the BCS polls and computers. Next up is Florida State.
NO. 5 NOTRE DAME: Kept its title hopes alive with a win over Army, but the Irish’s biggest obstacle to reaching the title game is that they lost to Michigan, 47-21.
NO. 6 RUTGERS: Previously unbeaten Scarlet Knights had their hopes for a national title or Rose Bowl trip ruined with a crushing, end-of-the-dream-season loss at Cincinnati.
NO. 7 ARKANSAS: Still in the hunt after a ho-hum win over Mississippi State, but Razorbacks still must play Louisiana State and then Florida in Southeastern Conference title game.
