3 freeway deaths in first hours of holiday period

Three people died on Los Angeles County freeways during the first 12 hours of the Thanksgiving holiday period, an increase over last year when no fatalities were reported during the same time, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The first death occurred about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday when a 40-year-old motorcyclist was pinned under a vehicle on the Foothill Freeway at La Tuna Canyon Road.

At 12:55 a.m. Thursday, an 18-year-old motorist was killed on the Ventura Freeway when his car veered off the road and struck a freeway sign near Forest Lawn Drive.

Also on the Ventura, a 21-year-old man was struck while walking on the freeway at 3:30 a.m. Thursday near Winnetka Avenue. CHP investigators are trying to identify the vehicle that struck him and then drove off.
