Eagle Rock has landed

Susan Carpenter’s “Making Eagle Rock a Hip Nest” [Nov. 16] was not by any stretch of the imagination a thorough, complete or well-researched article. Fatty’s being referred to as a “coffee shop” and Imix as a “Chicano-Latino bookstore” are two examples.

Her dismissal of Fatty’s gave me apoplexy. Fatty’s is one of the finer purveyors of gourmet-organic vegetarian cuisine in Southern California with a superior wine list. One has to wonder whether Carpenter ventured inside Fatty’s. Imix has not only an excellent Chicano-Latino book collection, but also a well-chosen selection of political books.

It is great to see Eagle Rock merchants get recognition, but it should not be too much to ask for some accuracy.

Since I moved here in 1955, I have been trying to find which week of the year is the best to see the most complete eagle on the rock, or even more, what hour on what day of which month is Eagle Rock at its best.

Someone must know, or can figure it out. I have driven past it a thousand times and often wondered.

I don’t know who paid Carpenter to write the article about Eagle Rock but I wish she hadn’t. I’ve been able to live and raise a family here in Eagle Rock for eight years and now she single-handedly will have caused the demise of what is really just a community of houses and some stores, nothing else.

Every yuppie, wannabe hipster, rocker, actor and writer is now going to move here expecting to see twentysomething WB -- or whatever it’s called -- and, oh yes, CW actors nursing coffee at Swork. Couldn’t she have done some real writing about something important? Did she just inherit her grandma’s house in Eagle Rock and figured by writing this article she’d be able to sell it for lots of money?

She probably caused the stampede to Venice, changing it from the slum beach community we all loved to the uber-snob community it is today.

Why does the decision to live in a small community have to be based on whether it’s hip? Can’t it be just close to things you want to do or near a freeway entrance?
