Forwards Add Depth and Options

Training camp is over for the Ducks and the roster is set for Friday night’s regular-season opener against the Kings. Now comes the real challenge.

With summer acquisitions Stanislav Chistov and Travis Green making the team and rookie hopeful Ryan Shannon part of the 23-man mix, Coach Randy Carlyle now must parcel out ice time among a potentially deep group of forwards.

Ideally, four lines are set. Teemu Selanne, Andy McDonald and Chris Kunitz are on the top line with Dustin Penner, Todd Marchant and Shannon forming the second one.

Second-year offensive players Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry skated with Todd Fedoruk on Monday with Rob Niedermayer, Samuel Pahlsson and Travis Moen forming a possible checking line. Chistov and Green are also in the mix as wingers, giving Carlyle many options.

“There is competition for the position,” Carlyle said. “That will be something that will continue. It was fact last year and it will be fact this year.”

Getzlaf, who came up for good in January, says he welcomes the battle for ice time.

“We’re going to have to learn to push each other as a group,” he said. “It can become a pretty healthy thing in the dressing room to push each other for ice time.

“If you don’t have one line going, you know you have another line pushing. It puts a little more pressure on guys to perform every night.”

Ice time is often a coach’s key weapon in keeping players motivated.

“Things haven’t changed in that regard,” Carlyle said. “If we feel you’ve earned the right to play, you’re going to play. If you haven’t, you’re not going to play.”

Shannon and defenseman Shane O’Brien earned spots with their strong performance in camp. Shannon, 23, had a goal and five assists in five games, and the gritty O’Brien, also 23, contributed three points in six games and led the team with 26 penalty minutes.

“Both players earned their opportunity for a longer look,” Carlyle said. “They have solid years in the American Hockey League and they came into camp and made a statement.”

The Ducks set their roster by assigning center Tim Brent, right wing Shawn Thornton, defenseman Bruno St. Jacques and goaltender Michael Leighton to minor league Portland, Maine.
