Returning to his favorite turf course, Place Cowboy, a 6-1 shot, won the $69,150 War Chant by half a length in Monday racing at Santa Anita.

Owned by the Gould Family Trust and trained by Jim Cassidy, the 5-year-old, Irish-bred son of Compton Place scored for the third time in four races on the turf, beating Unfurl The Flag and seven others in 1:32.87 for the mile.

Corey Nakatani was aboard Place Cowboy, who has only one win in 13 starts elsewhere.

Whilly, the 7-2 second choice who was making his first start in more than six months, finished a troubled third.

Lava Man, who won his seventh in a row Saturday in the Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Santa Anita, will ship to Kentucky today to prepare for his match with Bernardini in the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs.

A 5-year-old California-bred who was claimed for $50,000 by STD Racing Stable and Jason Wood more than two years ago, Lava Man will train on Keeneland’s Polytrack before heading to Churchill Downs as the Classic nears.

George Washington, a multiple Group I winner from Europe, may join Bernardini and Lava Man in the Classic. A decision is expected soon on whether the 3-year-old son of Danehill will run in the Classic at 1 1/4 miles or the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
