Motorists experienced headache-inducing delays of more than three hours Friday night because a stretch of southbound Interstate 15 just south of the Cajon Pass in Devore was closed for construction and cars were detoured onto Interstate 215.

The closure in the area near San Bernardino and Fontana began at 9 a.m. Friday and was scheduled to last until 1 p.m. Sunday. Caltrans officials urged drivers to look for alternate routes or allow plenty of extra travel time, especially for those headed from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

“Go early, come back late or come back on Monday,” Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said Friday. She said she was also concerned about people who are planning to attend a rock concert of Def Leppard and Journey tonight at Hyundai Pavilion in Devore.

A CHP spokesman estimated that the backup Friday night extended more than five miles into the pass. “It’s bad,” he said. No accidents were reported and extra freeway assistance trucks were dispatched to the area.

Various closures of intersections in that area are expected on weekends through November, except for the Veterans Day and Thanksgiving weekends, according to Kasinga. All the routings and timings have not been set yet but next weekend, southbound drivers on I-15 will not be able to get onto the southbound I-215, she said.
