Virginia Cruises to 23-0 Victory

Jason Snelling ran for 131 yards and a touchdown, Jameel Sewell was again sharp at quarterback and Virginia’s defense played its best game Thursday night in a 23-0 victory over North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia, 3-5 overall, 2-2 in the ACC, won its 13th consecutive home game in the South’s oldest rivalry.

It was the 111th meeting, the fifth-oldest rivalry in Division I-A.

The Tar Heels (1-6, 0-4), whose only victory was a 45-42 victory over Division I-AA Furman, haven’t won at Scott Stadium since 1981.

Freshman Donovan Porterie threw for three touchdowns and 350 yards, and New Mexico (4-2, 2-2 Mountain West) matched its biggest comeback ever with a 34-31 victory over Utah (4-4, 2-2) at Albuquerque. The Lobos trailed 24-3 late in the first half after the Utes had scored on four possessions in a row.

Central Michigan defeated Bowling Green, 31-14, in a Mid-American Conference game at Mount Pleasant, Mich. The Chippewas are 5-3 and 5-0. The Falcons fell to 4-4 and 3-2.

The Dartmouth athletic department and team apologized for the fight that broke out at the end of the game against Holy Cross last weekend as the college and police continued to investigate the incident.
