For the third year in a row, trainer Mike Mitchell has won a graded stakes on turf with a horse he claimed.

Emulating what Star Over The Bay and Leprechaun Kid had done before him, Symphony Sid scored a 5-1 surprise in the $100,000 Carleton F. Burke Handicap on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Claimed for $50,000 by Mitchell for a partnership on July 19 at Del Mar, the 6-year-old Unbridled horse opened up an early 10-length lead under jockey Michael Baze and was never seriously menaced in the Grade III race, eventually prevailing by 5 1/2 lengths.

In defeating 4-5 favorite Artiste Royal and five others, Symphony Sid ran the 1 1/2 miles in 2:24.18 and gave Baze his first graded stakes victory. The win was the fifth in 22 starts for Symphony Sid and his third in 11 races on grass.

Earlier in the day at Santa Anita, Berriestoheaven, a 9-2 shot, rallied from off the pace to win the $74,100 Anoakia Stakes.

Tyler Baze, Michael’s cousin, rode the 2-year-old Smoke Glacken filly for M & B Partners LLC and trainer Paddy Gallagher. She won for the second time in four starts, beating 4-5 favorite Tizthen by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:11.32 for the six furlongs.

Organizer, a 22-1 shot, picked the right time to win his first race of the year, taking the $250,000 Empire Classic at Belmont Park. The Classic was the richest of a series of stakes events restricted to New York breds.

The 4-year-old son of Raffie’s Majesty ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.45 under jockey Eibar Coa. Carminooch, a 7-1 shot, was three-quarters of a length back in second and 3-2 favorite West Virginia was third. Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, was fourth.

Jockeys Garrett Gomez and Kent Desormeaux combined to win five other stakes races on the program. Gomez won the $100,000 Sleepy Hollow with Chief’s Lake, the $125,000 Hudson with Gold And Roses and the $125,000 Iroquois with No Reason. Desormeaux’s victories came aboard Grand Merger in the $100,000 Maid Of The Mist and Latitude Forty in the $65,000 Terreavigne.

Leah’s Secret, an 18-1 shot making her first start in a graded stakes, won the $300,000 Raven Run at Keeneland. Mark Guidry rode the 3-year-old daughter of Tiger Ridge for First Klass Stable and trainer Helen Pitts as she won for the fourth time in eight starts. She ran seven furlongs in 1:22.74.

The Tin Man, who has won consecutive Grade I races this year, will miss the $3-million Breeders’ Cup Turf on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Richard Mandella hasn’t been happy with the way the 8-year-old son of Affirmed has trained since winning the Clement L. Hirsch on Sept. 30 at Santa Anita, so he won’t ship the Arlington Million winner to Kentucky. The Tin Man, who has won more than $3 million, probably will be idle until 2007.

Shaggy Mane, the 6-5 favorite, won her fifth in a row, beating 3-2 second choice Vaca City Flyer in the $100,000 William P. Kyne Breeders’ Cup Express Handicap at Bay Meadows. The win in 1:09.34 for the six furlongs was the fifth in a row for the 3-year-old Bertrando filly.
