County supervisors OK restrictions on airport

Orange County supervisors narrowly approved a deal Tuesday giving Newport Beach veto power over runway expansion at John Wayne Airport.

The pact was approved 3 to 2 despite criticism that it did not give the county enough in return -- the city may not annex airport land or allow homes in the “crash zone” -- and gave too much consideration to one city at the expense of the rest of the county.

Board members Jim Silva, Bill Campbell and Tom Wilson voted for the deal, and Lou Correa and Chris Norby opposed it. Wilson said he initially had misgivings but came to support it.
