No more makeup for women in jail

Sept. 6, 1922: Authorities at the women’s ward of the Los Angeles County Jail added to the list of items that could not be sent from outside and female inmates protested, The Times reported.

“At last the blow has fallen; the last vestige of the inalienable rights of the sex to adorn their faces has been swept aside, judging from the wails of disappointment that emanated from the women’s ward of the County Jail,” the newspaper said.

“They were informed that no more may they while away the time during their incarceration in the institution by the use of a handy powder puff, or a lipstick.”
