AN L.A. SALE of European furnishings Monday drew some surprising results, including an early 20th century Louis XV gilt-bronze, mounted marquetry table that sold for $110,000 more than its pre-auction estimate. The table, a single-drawer piece with a marquetry panel depicting a romantic ruin amid a bucolic landscape, proved “the continuing strength of the European market,” said Andrew Jones, associate head of European furniture and decorative arts for auctioneer Bonhams & Butterfields. Also bid up at the auction: ecclesiastic pieces.
