Giguere Has Solid Beginning

The goaltending situation for the Ducks doesn’t figure to shake out until the end of camp, but Jean-Sebastien Giguere may have a slight leg up after his performance against the San Jose Sharks.

Giguere stopped all 10 shots during his 30 minutes of play, although the Sharks fielded a lineup Wednesday night that was missing several regulars, including reigning Hart Trophy winner Joe Thornton and NHL goal-scoring champion Jonathan Cheechoo.

“I’m pleased with the way things went for me,” Giguere said. “It was only half a game, but I felt good. Hopefully it’s a good preparation for me for the beginning of the season.”

In his first game since Game 5 of the Western Conference finals, Giguere said his range of movement was good and that the groin and hamstring problems that affected him last season were not an issue.

“Things are in the right place right now,” he said.

Giguere will start tonight’s exhibition in Anaheim against the Vancouver Canucks, and Ilya Bryzgalov figures to play when the Ducks visit the Sharks in Fresno on Saturday and the Canucks in Vancouver on Sunday. Bryzgalov gave up four goals Monday in a 7-1 loss to the Kings, though he didn’t have the benefit of Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger playing in front of him.

The Ducks will be busy, playing on four consecutive nights. Coach Randy Carlyle said two largely separate teams were created because of logistics. One group will play tonight and then on Monday, when the Ducks take on the Kings at Staples Center; the other will play Saturday and again on Sunday. Most of the veterans will stay in town.

“We feel it’s counterproductive to bring some of our veterans into that ‘B’ group,” Carlyle said. “Their stature gives them the respect from coaches and management that we feel they deserve.”
