Sept. 27, 1917: At the Pan-Pacific Conference held at San Francisco’s Hotel St. Francis, Sylvester L. Weaver of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce told delegates from all over the state about “the effective methods that Los Angeles has employed for years in keeping herself before the public, vigorously but not with immodesty,” The Times reported.

“No publication in the United States, regardless of size, has been overlooked by our publicity bureau ... and illustrations of landscapes, roads and flowers have been sent broadcast throughout the country,” Weaver said.

“The motion picture people,” he said, also help, “and the beauties of California are daily shown upon the screen throughout the world.”
