Chiefs’ Green Is Not Close to Returning

Quarterback Trent Green said Thursday the severe concussion that left him unconscious on Sept. 10 will keep him sidelined at least until after Kansas City’s game Oct. 8 against Arizona.

Speaking with reporters for the first time since absorbing the head-snapping hit in the season opener, the two-time All-Pro appeared to have lost a little weight. He said he was feeling better and finally able to drive, and that he might even join the Chiefs on the sideline Sunday in their game at home against San Francisco.

“It’s just a day-to-day, week-to-week thing. That is what the doctor told me my last visit last week, to not expect anything other than that,” he said. “Everybody handles it differently. Every concussion is different.”

Getting back by Oct. 8, he said, would not “be reasonable.”

“They’re going to want me to practice at least some prior to that point. I know I won’t practice this week. It remains to be seen if I’m going to do any next week. So considering by that point in time I will have missed three weeks, to all of a sudden practice and play in one week, that would be reaching.”

Journeyman backup Damon Huard has been starting in place of Green, whose combined passing yardage for the previous five seasons was exceeded only by Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning.

“I told [the doctors], ‘When you guys give me the green light, I’m going. You’ve got to set parameters,’ ” Green said. “If you tell me I’m OK to go, then I’m going.”

NFL owners will consider next month whether to play two regular-season games a year outside the country, starting with contests in Canada, Mexico, Britain and Germany.

The league has played numerous exhibition games overseas for the last two decades. The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will play an exhibition game next August in Beijing.

But last year’s San Francisco-Arizona game in Mexico City is the only regular-season matchup played outside the United States. It drew over 100,000 fans to Azteca Stadium.

Receiver Reggie Wayne rejoined the Indianapolis Colts for practice and was expected to play Sunday against the New York Jets.

Wayne flew to Louisiana on Sunday night after learning his 32-year-old brother, Rashad, was killed in a traffic accident.

Although Reggie Wayne did not speak with reporters, Coach Tony Dungy said he anticipated the 27-year-old receiver would play as the Colts (3-0) try to remain unbeaten.

“That’s what we’re planning, so I would think so,” Dungy said after practice. “But it is good to see him back.”

Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell tested his injured elbow with a few 20-yard tosses at the end of practice and he remained probable for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Andrew Walter will start at quarterback Sunday for the Oakland Raiders against the Cleveland Browns because Aaron Brooks’ shoulder is still giving him trouble.
