A 4,100-acre brush fire that at one point over the weekend threatened 230 homes and led to evacuations in Hesperia was contained by San Bernardino County firefighters Monday afternoon, despite windy conditions and difficult terrain, authorities said.

At its peak, 400 firefighters were out on the blaze, which began Saturday in the northeast corner of a cattle ranch.

Some areas where the fire burned were so soft and sandy that firefighters had to hike into the foothills because their vehicles could have gotten stuck, San Bernardino County fire spokeswoman Tracey Martinez said. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
