* St. Louis 4, at Houston 2: Adam Wainwright, a converted closer making his first start, gave up five hits in seven innings and came through with a run-scoring double as the Cardinals avoided their first 0-4 start since 1997 and ended a five-game losing streak to the Astros. Wainwright filled in for ace Chris Carpenter, who sat out because of inflammation in his right elbow.
