Weaver’s return a bit uncertain

Jered Weaver’s anticipated return against the Boston Red Sox on Monday in Fenway Park, a game that would match Weaver against Japanese right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, is looking a little iffy.

Weaver, slowed this spring by shoulder tendinitis, is scheduled to throw 90 pitches for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga tonight, but the right-hander could need one more rehab start, probably for triple-A Salt Lake, before being activated.

“It’s penciled in,” Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said of Weaver’s possible start in Boston. “It will depend on how he feels [today]. If he can pitch a little deeper into the game and get his pitch count where it needs to be and maintain his velocity, we’ll certainly look at doing that. But there’s a chance he could need one more rehab start.”

Bartolo Colon, meanwhile, stays on course for a late-April return. The right-hander, recovering from a rotator-cuff tear, threw 75 pitches over 5 2/3 innings for Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday, allowing two runs -- one earned -- and five hits, striking out five and walking none.

Colon is scheduled to pitch for Salt Lake on Sunday at Las Vegas, where he will look to increase his pitch count to 90. Barring a setback, he could return to the Angels on April 20 or 25.

An X-ray showed the fractures in the index and middle fingers of Chone Figgins’ right hand have healed, and the Angels third baseman began stretching the fingers and taking dry swings Tuesday.

Figgins, who had splints removed from the fingers, should be able to throw by this weekend and begin a brief minor league rehabilitation assignment late next week. Barring a setback, he could return to the Angels in late April.

“Once he gets his arm stretched out and takes some swings,” Scioscia said, “he won’t be that far away.”

Shea Hillenbrand, who missed five games because of a tight right groin, returned to the lineup Tuesday, singling once in five at-bats, but he moved gingerly on the base paths and will be re-evaluated today. There is a chance he could be placed on the disabled list.... Garret Anderson had three hits, and Maicer Izturis had two hits and three runs batted in Tuesday night. The Angels went five for 15 with runners in scoring position but stranded two runners in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
