Burbank police arrested a 66-year-old man hours after he backed his car into the outdoor food court at a Costco store Tuesday, injuring three people and toppling a baby out of her stroller.

Robert Livingston of West Hollywood was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication and was being held at the Burbank jail, said Sgt. Matthew Ferguson. He declined to identify the medication.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, police said.

The accident occurred just after 11 a.m. when Livingston lost control of his 1991 maroon Lincoln Town Car while backing from a handicapped parking spot, authorities said. Livingston told police that his gas pedal stuck, and tire tracks at the scene indicated that the car was accelerating as it careened into the food court.

The Lincoln hit a car that was on display and struck at least five rows of outdoor tables, where about 10 people were dining, police said.

Three members of one family were struck, including the stroller of a 1-year-old girl, police said. The stroller was hit at an angle and it spun away, said witness Larry Frye of Burbank.

“It was horrible,” said Frye, looking at the accident scene, which was still covered with cans of soda and other groceries at noon. “People were scattering like flies.”

Witnesses told police that the girl was ejected from the stroller but was unharmed, Ferguson said. Her mother, 29, and grandmother, 54, sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, police said.

Also injured was a 49-year-old man who was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. He had a broken pelvis and non-life-threatening injuries to his head and arms, Ferguson said.

The names of the injured were not released.
