Five questions facing UCLA going into training camp:

Will Eric Scott be at camp?

1. Scott, the Bruins’ receiver coach, was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary, which led to revelation of his past criminal record -- something UCLA officials say they knew nothing about. The Sheriff’s Department investigation will probably continue through camp, and Scott remains on administrative leave. The Bruins’ hierarchy remains mum about his future. It’s a tough spot. Scott has been instrumental in the Bruins’ recruiting resurgence locally, yet Athletic Director Dan Guerrero has portrayed Coach Karl Dorrell as having “healed” the Bruins program.

Who gets the boot?

2. Kicker Justin Medlock, who was responsible for 38% of the Bruins’ points, is gone and redshirt freshman Kai Forbath lacked Medlock’s laser-guided accuracy during spring practice. Forbath has Dorrell’s confidence, but walk-on Jimmy Rotstein, who will probably handle the kickoffs, waits in the wings.

Where’s the catch?

3. Last season, tailback Chris Markey led the Bruins with 35 receptions. The Bruins need a go-to guy and a deep threat, or their West Coast offense could go south. Brandon Breazell and Marcus Everett are strong candidates to evolve into top-notch receivers. Joe Cowan’s return from a knee injury will help, and Terrence Austin has the speed to fill the need.

Hello Pete Carroll, mind if the Bruins borrow one of your 10 tailbacks?

4. Markey, who gained 1,107 yards last season, sat out spring practice because of a stress fracture in his right foot. He has been cleared to play, but whom do the Bruins look to after that? Kahlil Bell gained 239 yards, but 102 came against Rice, and repeated concussions ended Derrick Williams’ career. Walk-on Ryen Carew will be given an opportunity and freshman Raymond Carter will make a case for himself, though Dorrell said Carter would “have to be guaranteed an X-number of plays” before a year of eligibility is burned.

Can the Bruins handle those great expectations?

5. Everyone is predicting that the Bruins will have the best season since Dorrell arrived, and why not? They have 20 starters back, the nonconference schedule has Utah, Brigham Young and a rebuilding Notre Dame team, and most of their key conference games are at home. That leaves no tolerance among Bruins fans for another 7-6 season. The Bruins faithful have a bare minimum of expectations: double-digit victories and a bowl date that does not come with a trip to Fort Worth, Las Vegas, San Francisco or El Paso. Oh yeah, and beat USC again.
