Byrnes, Diamondbacks agree on $30-million deal
The Arizona Diamondbacks and outfielder Eric Byrnes agreed Tuesday to a $30-million, three-year contract extension through 2010.
Byrnes is batting .303 with 17 homers, 64 runs batted in, 21 doubles and 28 steals. He is seventh in the National League in hits with 135 and fifth in triples with seven.
Shortstop Royce Clayton, 37, was given his unconditional release by the Toronto Blue Jays. He was an All-Star 10 years ago with St. Louis and played in 2,100 games over 17 seasons with 10 teams. . . . Reliever Casey Fossum was sent outright to triple-A Durham by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Because he has more than five years of major league experience, Fossum has three days to accept the move or become a free agent. . . . Boston signed outfielder Bobby Kielty, 31, to a minor league contract and assigned him to triple-A Pawtucket. He was released by Oakland on July 31.
