Quinn could get first taste of NFL

The media and the public might get their first look at Brady Quinn when the Browns begin their exhibition schedule tonight against visiting Kansas City.

Quinn, who signed Tuesday with the Browns, practiced Wednesday, but the practice was closed. Heavy rain forced the team indoors Thursday and a light workout Friday also was closed, so nobody outside the team has gotten a look at the former Notre Dame quarterback, who is third on the team’s depth chart behind Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson.

Cleveland Coach Romeo Crennel said Quinn could get limited time against the underdog Chiefs.

Although Kansas City sneaked into the playoffs on the final day of last season, the Chiefs were a bad road team.

Before losing five of eight away from Arrowhead Stadium in the regular season, including a 31-28 loss in Cleveland last Dec. 3, the Chiefs were 0-2 on the road in the exhibition season, outscored 41-14 in losses to Houston and the New York Giants.

Boxing

Daniel Ponce De Leon will try to successfully defend his World Boxing Organization junior-featherweight title for a fourth time when he meets undefeated challenger Rey Bautista in Sacramento.

Ponce De Leon, who has won 31 of 32, is -180 to retain his crown, meaning a bettor would have to wager $180 to win $100. Bautista is +150, so a $100 bet would mean a return of $150 should Bautista claim the title.

Although he is only 20, Bautista already has had 23 fights. He earned his shot at Ponce De Leon shot with a unanimous decision over the previously undefeated Sergio Medina, knocking him down twice along the way.

Given the fighters’ resumes, it seems unlikely the bout will go the scheduled 12 rounds. Ponce De Leon, 26, and Bautista have combined for 45 knockouts.

Baseball

The runs could come early and often when Philadelphia continues its series with visiting Atlanta.

Adam Eaton, who has had first-inning issues all season, is scheduled to pitch for the Phillies. The Braves will counter with Lance Cormier, who is returning to the rotation for the first time since two ugly starts in June.

Eaton, who hasn’t lasted seven innings for two months, has an earned-run average of more than 7 in the first inning in 2007. Cormier is 0-2 with an ERA of 15.58. In his three appearances this season, Cormier has given up 15 earned runs -- including seven homers -- in 8 2/3 innings.

The series between the two National League East and wild-card contenders is the first in Philadelphia since the Braves swept three to open the season in early April.
