Dye will stay with White Sox

Outfielder Jermaine Dye agreed to terms on a two-year, $22 million contract extension Saturday to stay with the Chicago White Sox through the 2009 season.

Dye, the most vaulable player of the 2005 World Series, could have been a free agent at the end of this season. Dye will receive $9.5 million in 2008 and $11.5 million in 2009. A mutual option pays him $12 million for the 2010 season or gives him a $1-million buyout.

Dye, 33, has a team-high 24 home runs and is batting .245 with 62 RBIs in 104 games. Last season, he batted .315 with 44 homers and 120 RBIs.

The New York Mets put catcher Ramon Castro, who has lower back pain, on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of Sandy Alomar Jr. from triple-A New Orleans. The move with Castro is retroactive to Monday.

Castro, who is batting .276 with seven homers and 22 RBIs, is the second Mets catcher to land on the disabled list in the last six days. Paul Lo Duca was put on the DL last Sunday because of tightness in his right hamstring.

With Lo Duca and Castro hurt, the Mets catchers are Alomar and Mike DiFelice, who were New Orleans’ catchers for much of the season.

The Boston Red Sox called up Bobby Kielty from triple-A Pawtucket, giving them an experienced backup outfielder.

They optioned rookie outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury to Pawtucket after he was recalled to play in Friday night’s second game of a doubleheader against the Angels.

The Oakland A’s optioned left-hander Dan Meyer to triple-A Sacramento, a day after he made his first major league start.
