Re “Land on the side of safety,” editorial, Aug. 22

The real solution is to reduce the number of north field flights at Los Angeles International Airport to a safe level and move the resulting overflow traffic to L.A.’s regional airports. This would also help alleviate surface traffic throughout the region. After all, why should the voices of the politicians and residents around those regional airports count for more than those of the people near LAX?

Please explain how reconfiguring the north field at LAX will prevent a pilot from changing the frequency on his radio without being instructed to do so and crossing a live runway without clearance.

Perhaps the editors of The Times should inform themselves about the real issues regarding LAX before stating an opinion.
