Signs of the times
Re “Time of day calling it quits at AT&T;,” column, Aug. 29
At 53, I’m too young to be an old coot, yet I find myself uttering, “I remember when. . .” geezerisms. I remember when freeways had names, not numbers; when supermarkets taught their checkers how to bag groceries; and, now, when you could call the phone company and get the exact time of day. There is something comforting about that calm human voice telling me the time -- rather than the display on a cold gadget. I’ll miss it.
