San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan probably will sit out no more than a few games after injuring his ankle and knee.

Duncan was hurt against Portland on Sunday, and the team said his MRI exam came back negative Monday.

He has a sprained right ankle and will sit out Wednesday’s game against Dallas, Spurs spokesman Tom James said. The injury will be reassessed this week, and Duncan probably will return in the next few games.

“It’s not a big deal at all,” James said.

The Jazz has reached an agreement with Jerry Sloan on a one-year contract extension that will keep the coach with Utah through the end of next season.

Sloan, 65, who took over the Jazz in 1988, is the franchise’s winningest coach and needs only 47 victories to become the first coach in NBA history to win 1,000 games with the same franchise.

New York point guard Stephon Marbury played the second half of the Knicks’ loss to Phoenix on Sunday night unaware his father had been taken to a hospital, where he died before the game ended.

Don Marbury, 69, was taken from Madison Square Garden to St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center during halftime, reportedly because of chest pains, but a family member advised a Knicks official not to inform Stephon Marbury at the time.

Marbury learned of his father’s death from a family friend after the game. No cause was given.
