Still looking for a good sign

What’s with these general managers who can’t see what’s in front of them? Andruw Jones hit .222 last year. He is on the downside of his career. Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier are bona fide ballplayers who are good fielders with good arms and will hit .300 with power -- and they’re young.

So now Colletti wants to move mediocre Pierre to left? And trade Kemp or Ethier? Why are the Dodgers so reluctant to trust their instincts and commit to the young ballplayers? In three years you’d have to give up half a team for Kemp.

If the Braves didn’t want this overrated, lackadaisical has-been, what in the name of Al Campanis possessed Ned Colletti to empty the vault on this guy? While Jones averaged 34 homers in the launching pad known as Atlanta, let me be the first to predict that he’ll be lucky to hit 25 dingers in the rarefied night air of Dodger Stadium.

Admittedly, 25 homers in today’s Dodgers world is considered to be a whole bunch, but ask yourself: Is $720,000 per swat really worth it?

Kudos to Ned Colletti for not pulling the trigger to get Miguel Cabrera. I could see trading maybe Matt Kemp and some prospects. Then I read that the Marlins were asking for not only Kemp but also James Loney and No. 1 pitching prospect Clayton Kershaw.

Who else were we getting in return, Lou Gehrig?

Is it because the Angels are the “little brother” team down the road that there is no indignation by the opinionistas at The Times after they essentially conceded the AL to the Tigers and Red Sox by not including manager-killer Ervin Santana in the Miguel Cabrera deal? If this were the Dodgers, Plaschke, Simers and Dwyre would be falling all over themselves about how the sky is falling.

Here’s a trade for the Angels -- Gary Matthews for unhappy Scott Rolen of the Cardinals. The Angels get their third baseman and the Cardinals get a center fielder to replace Jim Edmonds. The Angels get some needed power (when healthy) and Tony La Russa gets Rolen out of his clubhouse. Everyone wins.
