Gary Collins not charged in death
Prosecutors said Monday they will not charge entertainer Gary Collins in connection with the death of another driver in a traffic collision six weeks ago.
The Oct. 23 crash occurred when Warren Gates, 89, ran a red light and struck the Ford Explorer driven by Collins, police said. Gates died Friday at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
Collins, 69, was determined not to be at fault in the crash, although officers at the scene said they smelled alcohol on his breath. Collins’ blood-alcohol level was measured at .21% (the state limit is .08%) and last week he was sentenced to four days in jail and four years’ probation, said a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney.
Collins is a television guest and host who has appeared on programs such as “Hour Magazine,” “Star Search” and “The New Hollywood Squares.”
