Kansas Coach Mark Mangino was named the Associated Press coach of the year after leading the Jayhawks to their first major bowl game in 38 years.

Mangino, 51, received 28 of a possible 58 votes to win the award over Missouri’s Gary Pinkel, who had 11.

The Jayhawks won 11 consecutive games before losing to Missouri, which cost Kansas a spot in the Big 12 Conference championship.
