Magic man

I’m sure you’ll get a million of these responses after Bill Plaschke’s article, but in some 30 years of covering, interviewing and observing politicians, celebrities and sports stars, Magic Johnson is far and away the nicest, most genuine and most caring. He’s unique. We’re lucky to have him.

What is truly “Magic” about a man who grew up in a family of 10 kids, whose father hauled trash and worked the late shift on an auto assembly line, has little to do with basketball or, for that matter, his astonishing success.

He lives his life purposely, choosing never to look back with remorse, regret or despair.

He has lived a life most of us can only dream of.

And yet, unlike so many of the others who have led similar lives, wishes to share a piece of himself; cheerfully, openly and enthusiastically.

I have known Earvin Johnson for close to 30 years now. He is the same man he was when I covered his selection to the Lakers all those years ago.

He is the most comfortable man in his own skin I have ever met.

That is more important than success and celebrity and wealth.

That is happiness. And that is, truly, what we should aspire to.

Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you’ve got.

He has both.
