I truly hope that UCLA will not overlook their “bird in the hand” in order to seek out a big-name coach. DeWayne Walker has shown that he has the ability to get his players to believe in him and play hard.

He has also been effective in recruiting kids in the Southern California area that were lost to other schools on a regular basis in previous years.

Bringing in someone like Rick Neuheisel will only bring more headaches for the program.

It is Dec. 28 and no head coach. One has to wonder who is making the decisions at UCLA. Is it the athletic director or the chancellor? Why would you need an athletic director if the chancellor is making the decisions? I just don’t picture J.D. Morgan allowing Chancellor Young to choose coaches. Guess those were the glory days of UCLA athletics. At this rate, we will be lucky to have a coach by spring football.

So T.J. Simers and Bill Plaschke are ganging up on Dan Guerrero for not moving fast enough to sign a new coach. Apparently, they don’t care whom he signs as long as he does it pronto. Of course, over the summer, these two hacks were pestering the Lakers to give up Andrew Bynum and anyone else on the roster not named Bryant for a “name” player. And before that, they couldn’t wait for the Dodgers to trade Matt Kemp.

I think that T.J. Simers has an ulterior motive. I think he wants Dan Guerrero’s job! Well, T.J., rest assured that we Bruins faithful won’t let you take even a single step north of the campus hospital, which is the only place in Westwood where your efforts are productive and praiseworthy.

My 9-year-old son and I were watching the Las Vegas Bowl, and when the Bruins scored at the end of the first half he said, “Daddy, now they have to go for two and cut the lead to three because there is no real difference between being down four and being down five.” When they set up for the kick I told him that they must be planning a fake.

We left to go to a party and did not watch the rest of the game. How did it turn out?

It must be that time again in Southern California. The Tournament of Roses is putting the final touches on the parade, the Trojans are preparing to play in the Rose Bowl and Bill Plaschke is back and rested from a brief vacation, but wait! Plaschke blasts the Bruins and their coach search before he launches his annual “He’s going to the NFL” assault on Pete Carroll. What’s up with that? You OK, Bill?
