A woman and her niece were killed Thursday morning in a collision that occurred after a semitruck cab skidded into the path of their car in the Wilmington area, authorities said.

Officials said the driver of the Honda Accord, a woman believed to be in her late 20s, died at the scene. Her niece, a girl about 15 who was riding in the back seat, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. In addition, a woman about 20 years old riding in the car’s front seat was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Authorities said her injuries appeared to be minor.

Los Angeles Police Sgt. Jacqueline Boyer said the collision was reported shortly after 10:40 a.m. in the 2300 block of East Anaheim Street. She said the Honda was heading west when the driver of the eastbound truck, for undetermined reasons, apparently braked hard, sending his vehicle skidding across the road into the car’s path. Boyer said the skid was not related to Thursday’s wet weather.
