A Los Angeles police officer fatally shot a man Saturday night in South Los Angeles after the man allegedly pointed a gun at him, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 7:45 p.m. at Broadway and 36th Place after police saw two cars driving erratically, possibly racing, and tried to pull them over, said Officer Mike Lopez, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

The car in which the man who was shot was riding turned from Broadway onto 36th Place, where the man got out and allegedly pointed a handgun at two officers, Lopez said. One of the officers then shot him. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
