Visually Uninspired

I was really looking forward to the article on Jennifer Steinkamp (“The Garden in Her Machine,” by Gendy Alimurung, The Art Issue, Jan. 28). Sadly, both the subject and the writing fell far short of my expectations. It seems as if Steinkamp’s art is neither a bold, new visual direction nor an emotional insight of any consequence. It is almost a late-20th century piece of “folk art” that is easily overpowered by even the lowliest screen saver.

As far as the writing is concerned, I take great offense as an Art Center alumnus to being cataloged as an “eye-candy-obsessed workaholic.” While it is true that Art Center graduates excel at creating work that is visually stunning, this is merely a side effect of the rigorous thought process that goes into producing it in the first place.
