The Edmonton Oilers honored one of their all-time greats and then went out and lost to one of the NHL’s worst teams Tuesday night at Edmonton, Canada.

Curtis Joseph made 26 saves and the Phoenix Coyotes defeated Edmonton, 3-0, on the night the Oilers retired Mark Messier’s No. 11.

The Oilers, playing in vintage orange and blue jerseys from the team’s 1980s Stanley Cup years, mustered only two shots in the first period.

Phoenix opened the scoring with just over six minutes left in the first period when the Oilers failed to clear the zone while shorthanded.
