Livingston leaves gap at point

Lacking depth at point guard because of Shaun Livingston’s ankle injury, the Clippers are expected to sign Alvin Williams to a 10-day contract before today’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Livingston suffered a sprained right ankle in Monday’s loss to the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena.

He sat out Wednesday’s victory over the Warriors at Staples Center, has not practiced recently and might not play today. Williams joins starter Sam Cassell and backup Daniel Ewing in the backcourt.

“My greatest fear was going into [today’s] game with only two point guards and then having one of them go down,” said Coach Mike Dunleavy, who coached the Portland Trail Blazers when the team selected Williams in the second round of the 1997 draft.

“We only had Sam and Daniel. We have to be careful with how we use Sam in practice and how many minutes we play him. We’ll get Alvin into practice and get him up to speed as fast as we can.”

Williams, slowed because of knee problems in an eight-year NBA career, has not played in the league this season and appeared in only one game in the 2005-06 season. He has averaged 9.1 points and 4.1 assists in his career.

In the 2002-03 season, Williams averaged a personal-best 13.2 points and 5.3 assists for the Toronto Raptors.
