Diamondbacks put Johnson on the DL
Arizona pitcher Randy Johnson was put on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season, sidelined Tuesday because of a sore back before his scheduled start at St. Louis. The Diamondbacks promoted right-hander Yusmeiro Petit from triple-A Tucson to pitch in Johnson’s place.
The 43-year-old left-hander said he doesn’t believe the injury is career-threatening.
“That hasn’t even been part of the conversation,” Johnson said. “I think when you’ve been around as long as I have, you manage whatever comes across. It’s just one more obstacle.”

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Salomon Torres filed a grievance against the team nearly four months ago, alleging he was induced into signing a below-market contract last year by promises the club would rent his baseball training complex in the Dominican Republic. Torres personally negotiated his $6.2-million, two-year deal in March 2006, when he was a setup reliever.
